KIDS IN GAMLA STAN - BACK IN TIME
In medieval Gamla Stan, most children didn’t go to school. By the age of six or seven, life was already filled with work - carrying firewood, fetching water, and looking after younger siblings.
A time-travel journey back to historic Stockholm reveals a childhood that was more work than play.
Did you know:
• Most kids didn’t learn to read, write, or count. In medieval Gamla Stan and up until the mid-1800s, most children couldn’t read, write, or do maths.
• Boys and girls didn’t go to the same school until the very end of the 1800s!
• Before phones and mobiles, people sent letters - called “tickets”! If you could read and write, you’d give your ticket to a servant, and magically, the same day it could end up with your friend, neighbour, or someone else. It actually worked really well!
• In the 1600s and for nearly 200 years after, wearing wigs was the fashion - for children and adults from wealthy families. Sadly, lice loved your real hair hiding under the wig…
• Kids from rich families dressed like tiny adults. There was no special fashion for children or teenagers. Clothes were often tight, itchy, and you needed help to get dressed or undressed!
• Until 1880, neither children nor adults were allowed to be homeless or without work. A child found begging on the streets was called a ‘street child’ and could be sent to a children’s home, where life was harsh, and trying to escape could lead to serious punishment.
